The Lotus factory in Hethel remains vital for the Norfolk economy, with the company reassuring the UK Business Secretary that it has no plans for closure. This confirmation secures 1,300 jobs and dispels concerns that the sports car manufacturer was considering moving its production to the US.
The urgent Sunday meeting between Jonathan Reynolds and Lotus/Geely management was prompted by reports of potential relocation. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson stated that Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus had temporarily halted production in mid-May due to US tariffs, but with these duties set to be significantly reduced, the company is preparing to resume operations. The Hethel plant is Lotus’s only UK site and produces the Emira sports car, with 60% of its output destined for the US, along with an electric hypercar.
Local Labour MP Ben Goldsborough had voiced “deep concern” over the rumors, highlighting the factory’s importance to the local economy and skilled workforce. The government’s broader commitment to supporting the automotive sector further reinforces the positive outlook for Lotus’s continued presence in Norfolk.
