Controversial Antisemitism Guidelines Signed by NYC Mayor Before Election

Date:

Eric Adams has officially implemented the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism across New York City government through an executive order. The signing ceremony at a synagogue underscored Adams’ effort to address rising antisemitic sentiment while positioning himself as a defender of Jewish communities ahead of the upcoming primary.

The IHRA definition includes examples that have become subjects of intense debate, particularly those that could classify certain critiques of Israeli state policies as antisemitic. Civil liberties organizations have expressed concern that these provisions might be applied too broadly, potentially suppressing legitimate academic and political discourse about Middle Eastern affairs.

As Adams prepares for a challenging primary while facing corruption allegations, his adoption of this definition reflects both policy commitment and electoral strategy. His opponents present dramatically different approaches: Andrew Cuomo has demonstrated unwavering support for Israeli leadership, while Zohran Mamdani has taken progressive positions that include calling for accountability regarding what he describes as war crimes in Gaza.
