Martin St. Louis, once an undrafted underdog who fought his way into the NHL Hall of Fame, is now leading the Montreal Canadiens back to the playoffs with the same relentless determination that defined his playing career.
Now in his third year as head coach, St. Louis has guided the youngest team in the NHL to a surprise playoff berth, far ahead of the franchise’s rebuild timeline. The Canadiens clinched the final Eastern Conference wild card with a 4–2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, setting up a first-round matchup against the top-seeded Washington Capitals.
Veteran forward Brendan Gallagher credited St. Louis for instilling belief across the roster. “This doesn’t happen without his belief,” said Gallagher. “It’s amazing how he gets guys to buy into his message.”
Known for his motivational style and vivid metaphors, St. Louis inspires players like defenseman Kaiden Guhle, who said, “He’s such a good motivator. Sometimes you’re just like, ‘How did he come up with that?’”
After a rocky start to the season, where the team ranked 31st by December 1, St. Louis kept his team focused. A midseason surge and a strong 15-5-6 finish proved his methods were working. General manager Kent Hughes praised St. Louis’ ability to keep the team motivated through adversity: “He’s done an incredible job of keeping people focused, motivated, believing.”
St. Louis draws from personal experience. Undrafted and overlooked for his size, he rose to become a Stanley Cup champion and league MVP. His unwavering self-belief, influenced by his late mother’s encouragement, now fuels his coaching journey.
“I have my own expectations of myself and what I can be, and I’m not gonna let anybody tell me what I can’t be,” said St. Louis.
Despite early doubts about his leap from youth hockey to the NHL bench, St. Louis has silenced critics and positioned himself as a frontrunner for the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.
“Marty is a real passionate young man,” said former Canadiens coach Alain Vigneault. “There was no doubt he was going to move that team forward quicker than anybody anticipated.”
