‘Steel Cotton Rail Trail’ Bids to Be New Pennine Classic

A new 62-mile trail is set to become a classic northern walk, offering a compelling alternative to the main spine of the Pennines. The Steel Cotton Rail Trail, linking Sheffield and Manchester, has officially launched, drawing walkers to the often-overlooked landscapes of the High Peak.
This 14-section route is designed to be explored in manageable, day-length pieces. Its “rail-pegged” design, using stations on the Hope Valley Line, makes it incredibly convenient and a strong rival to other trails that require complex transport logistics.
The trail hopes to draw walkers who traditionally rush for Edale and Kinder Scout. While it does include a 7.5-mile leg from Edale, its main focus is on the rich “post-industrial” areas, with their unique blend of “work and wilderness,” historic tramways, and preserved canal basins.
The variety is exceptional. Walkers can choose their challenge: tough moorland climbs, level riverside ambles along the Goyt, or fascinating urban exploration. The trail passes through the dramatic scenery of New Mills, with its viaducts and gorges.
With full waymarking and free online maps, this new route is ready for adventurers. It’s a “perfect” autumn walk that captures all the “magical moods” of the season, and it’s set to become a new favourite for walkers from both cities.
