Google is set to alter how Android device backups are managed in terms of cloud storage by applying them toward the free storage quota provided with each Google Account. Presently, these backups, which encompass SMS messages, call logs, device settings, and app data, do not impact the 15GB of complimentary storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. However, with the forthcoming update, these backups will now be included in the total storage limit.
This change is anticipated to be implemented in the coming weeks. According to Google, the average Android backup will increase storage usage by approximately 40MB. Users nearing or exceeding their storage limit might need to either delete unnecessary data or opt for a Google One subscription to accommodate additional storage needs. If an account runs out of available storage, automatic device backups will be temporarily suspended until more space is cleared.
In addition to revising its storage policy, Google is reportedly working on enhanced backup controls that will enable users to select specific apps and data types to include in their backups. This added flexibility aims to help users better manage their storage by reducing the backup size, thereby granting them more control over their cloud storage allocation.
