Japan’s Emperor Naruhito inaugurated the 20th Asian Games on Saturday with a vibrant opening ceremony in Nagoya, setting the stage for the continent’s largest multi-sport competition. The event was held at a stadium with a capacity of 30,000 and was attended by high-profile figures including Empress Masako and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry.
More than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories are set to compete in over 40 sports during the Games, which will run until October 4. The competitions will range from traditional sports like athletics and swimming to unique events such as kabaddi, sepak takraw, and the debut of eSports, breakdancing, padel, and mixed martial arts.
The first gold medals are anticipated to be awarded on Sunday as the Games progress. This year’s event also doubles as a qualifying opportunity for the 2028 Olympics in seven sports, providing additional motivation for athletes aiming for future Olympic participation.
Despite the excitement surrounding the Games, organizers have faced logistical hurdles, including challenges posed by severe flooding in Nagoya and transportation issues. Some teams have also expressed concerns about the accommodation facilities provided.
Leading sporting nations such as India, China, and Japan are among the key competitors, with several young athletes expected to capture the spotlight throughout the tournament.
