David and Hazlewood Lead Australia to First T20 Win in Darwin

Date:

Australia overcame a disastrous batting start to secure a 17-run victory over South Africa in the series opener at Marrara Oval. The hosts, reduced to 6 for 75 early on, managed to reach 178 thanks to Tim David’s outstanding innings.
David’s 83 off 52 balls was a masterclass in power hitting, featuring eight sixes. His partnership with the tailenders ensured Australia posted a competitive total despite the early wickets. A missed catch on 56 proved costly for South Africa as David made them pay instantly.
Chasing 179, South Africa relied heavily on Ryan Rickelton, who scored 71 off 55 balls. However, the rest of the lineup crumbled under the pressure of Hazlewood’s disciplined bowling, which yielded three for 27, and Zampa’s economical two for 33.
Maxwell’s one for 29 and a stunning boundary-line catch in the final over showcased his all-round value to the side. The moment Rickelton departed, South Africa’s hopes faded quickly.
The result extends Australia’s dominance in T20 cricket, while South Africa’s form woes deepen, with only six wins in their last 13 games.
