Iran’s Resistance Axis Stands Firm After Khamenei Succession

Date:

The network of armed groups and political movements allied with Iran — often described as the resistance axis — moved quickly to express solidarity after the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader. The Houthi movement in Yemen was among the first to offer congratulations, publishing a statement on Telegram celebrating the appointment as a victory for the Islamic Revolution and a blow to its enemies. The message was consistent with the broader posture of Iran’s proxy forces: the Islamic Republic is intact and the resistance continues.
Mojtaba Khamenei was confirmed by the Assembly of Experts on Sunday following a decisive vote that came weeks after the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28. He is a 56-year-old conservative cleric who spent his career building influence within the regime’s informal power structures. His deep ties to the IRGC have been especially important in securing the loyalty of the Iranian military apparatus.
Iran’s domestic institutions also moved rapidly to consolidate behind the new leader. The IRGC, armed forces, parliament, and security officials all issued formal endorsements. Ali Larijani praised Mojtaba’s ability to lead the country during what he called sensitive conditions. Iranian state media broadcast the full scope of institutional support, framing the transition as an orderly continuation of revolutionary governance.
The broader military picture remained volatile. Israel launched new strikes on Iranian infrastructure on Monday. Iran attacked Gulf states — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE — in coordinated operations. Civilian deaths were confirmed in Saudi Arabia. Bahrain’s desalination plant was damaged. The IRGC threatened to push oil above $200 a barrel if Israeli strikes on Iranian energy sites continued. The United States pledged restraint on Iranian energy infrastructure.
The resistance axis’s rapid expression of solidarity with Mojtaba Khamenei reflects the deep integration between the new supreme leader and Iran’s regional strategy. Unlike a change in leadership that might signal a potential shift in approach, Mojtaba’s appointment is being framed by all sides as ideological continuity. For the axis’s enemies, that message is a warning. For Iran’s allies, it is a rallying cry.
