A US official has confirmed there will be no presidential summit in the “immediate future,” following a call between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The call on Monday was described as “productive” but did not lead to a concrete plan. The official, speaking anonymously, said a follow-up in-person meeting was “not necessary.”
This clarification was needed after President Trump, following a call with Putin last Thursday, announced a Budapest summit “within two weeks.”
The Kremlin’s spokesperson also commented Tuesday, stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a meeting.
This is the latest “abrupt shift” by Trump, who hosted Putin in Alaska in August but has also acknowledged “frustrations” with the Russian leader, even while boasting of his ability to end the Ukraine war.
