The possibility of a direct meeting between Trump and Putin has emerged following successful discussions between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian president in Moscow. White House officials indicated that such a summit could occur within the coming week.
Witkoff’s three-hour meeting at the Kremlin on Wednesday prompted Trump to declare that “great progress was made” in efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. The special envoy’s visit came just days before Trump’s Friday deadline for Russia to engage in peace negotiations or face additional sanctions.
Trump later communicated with European leaders about his plans for a one-on-one meeting with Putin, followed by discussions with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy. The president also held a phone conversation with Zelenskyy, who was returning to Kyiv from frontline areas in northeastern Ukraine.
Despite the apparent diplomatic momentum, substantial challenges remain according to US officials. Russia’s territorial claims and the lack of a concrete ceasefire proposal continue to pose significant barriers to any comprehensive peace agreement.
