After 134 Years of History, Salah Earns His Place Among Liverpool’s All-Time Greats

Date:

No name in Liverpool’s 134 years of football history will be forgotten, but few have earned their place on the all-time honours list more definitively than Mohamed Salah. This week, the Egyptian forward confirmed what had long seemed inevitable — that he would leave the club at the end of the season, departing on a free transfer this summer despite having 12 months remaining on his current contract. The agreement to part ways reflects the mutual respect between player and club.

Salah’s record at Liverpool reads like a work of fiction. In nine seasons and 435 appearances, he scored 255 goals — a total that places him third in the club’s all-time scoring list. He stands alongside Roger Hunt and behind only Ian Rush on that list, company that requires no further explanation. His individual honours are similarly impressive, with four Premier League Golden Boot awards and three PFA Player of the Year recognitions among the most prestigious.

The farewell he delivered to fans was deeply personal. In a video message shared widely across social media, Salah described Liverpool as something far beyond a football club, calling it a passion, a history, and a spirit that defied simple description. He spoke warmly of teammates and staff, and he thanked supporters for standing by him during the toughest moments of his career. His parting invocation of the club’s most beloved anthem was a perfect conclusion to his message.

This season has been his most demanding at the club. A very public dispute with head coach Arne Slot in December — in which Salah publicly questioned the quality of their relationship and implied he had been made a scapegoat — was a jolt to the club’s usually carefully managed public image. He was briefly excluded from the squad but returned and found the form that made him famous. His Champions League strike against Galatasaray was history-making: the 50th European goal of his career, a milestone no African player had previously reached.

Liverpool will focus, the club says, on celebrating his legacy formally later in the year when he bids his final farewell to Anfield. His agent has refused to disclose where he will go next, and it appears a decision remains genuinely unmade. The summer transfer market will be defined in part by the chase for Mohamed Salah’s signature. For now, Anfield simply counts down the days until it can send off one of its greatest ever servants in the manner he deserves.
