An ad from Ontario, Canada, featuring Ronald Reagan has been called “fraudulent” and “fake” by president Trump, who has now halted all trade talks with the country.
Trump accused Canada of “egregious behavior” on truth social and alleged the ad was an attempt to influence US court decisions on tariffs.
The ad was launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford to protest the 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods. It features Reagan’s 1987 warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” was used without permission and “misrepresents” the former president’s full message.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, escalates the trade dispute and puts a vital economic partnership at risk.
