Iran Blames Qatar for Stalling Investigation; Doha Denies Allegations.

Date:

Iran has accused Qatar of hindering an investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amid recent regional conflict. Tehran claims these pilots went missing and is seeking Qatar’s cooperation in the matter. However, Qatar has dismissed these allegations, firmly denying that it is detaining the pilots. An Iranian military official, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, expressed frustration over the delay, noting that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force had been waiting for months to receive clearance to visit Qatar and conduct their investigation. He urged Doha to grant access and called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross to get involved in resolving the issue.

In a related development, Iran has reported recovering the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an attack that involved the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has categorically denied any claims that Iranian pilots are being held in the country. He explained that the pilots had violated Qatari airspace, prompting defensive measures when communication attempts failed. Qatar maintains that its search and rescue teams have actively conducted operations to locate the missing pilots and any remains.

According to Qatari authorities, they had coordinated with Iran over the transfer of one pilot’s remains that were recovered. They also invited Iranian officials in April to visit Qatar and receive information about the ongoing search and rescue efforts. However, Qatar claims that Iran has yet to respond to this invitation, further complicating the situation.

This dispute arises against a backdrop of ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and other regional powers following the escalation of conflict earlier this year. Amid these tensions, Qatar has played a significant diplomatic role, striving to reduce hostilities and facilitate communication between the involved parties. Despite its efforts, the disagreement over the Iranian pilots remains a sticking point between the two nations.
