President Trump has ordered the massive USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier to mobilize for Middle East deployment as the window for Iran nuclear negotiations appears to be closing. The carrier’s departure from Caribbean waters and approximately three-week journey to join the USS Abraham Lincoln signals Trump’s determination to maintain pressure on Tehran as diplomatic discussions continue.
The decision came after Trump’s Washington meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, during which leaders coordinated approaches to Iran negotiations. Netanyahu has insisted that Israel cannot accept agreements focused solely on nuclear enrichment without addressing Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities and support for organizations threatening regional security.
Iranian officials have indicated potential flexibility on nuclear enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief that could revitalize the economy. However, Iranian leadership has firmly resisted demands regarding ballistic missile programs and proxy support, viewing such requirements as violations of sovereignty and unacceptable limitations on defense capabilities.
The USS Gerald R Ford has been operating since June 2025, first in Mediterranean waters before Caribbean operations where the carrier demonstrated capabilities in the dramatic January Maduro seizure. The Middle East redeployment extends crew deployments indefinitely as the Iran situation develops without clear resolution.
Trump delivered increasingly forceful messages to Iranian leadership throughout the week. Thursday brought characterizations of negotiation failure as potentially “very traumatic” for Tehran while suggesting agreement within roughly one month. Friday’s Fort Bragg remarks indicated that regime change might ultimately be preferable to continued negotiations after nearly five decades of diplomatic engagement.
