Australian Collapse Hands Proteas Convincing 98-Run Win

Date:

A spectacular batting collapse has seen Australia slump to a 98-run defeat against South Africa in the first ODI at Cazaly’s Stadium. Cruising in their pursuit of 297, the home side imploded from a position of strength at 0-60, losing six wickets for a mere 29 runs in a disastrous passage of play orchestrated by South African spinner Keshav Maharaj.
The chief destroyer, Maharaj, delivered the performance of his career, claiming his first-ever ODI five-wicket haul. Bowling his ten overs unchanged, the left-armer mesmerized the Australian batters to finish with remarkable figures of 5-33. His spell included the key wickets of Alex Carey and Josh Inglis, who both fell playing poor shots, halting Australia’s chase in its tracks.
The Proteas had earlier posted a challenging total of 8-296, built upon a 92-run opening stand and half-centuries from Aiden Markram (82) and the returning Temba Bavuma (65). Even Travis Head’s surprising success with the ball, taking 4-57, couldn’t prevent the visitors from setting a daunting target on a pitch that offered unexpected assistance to the spinners.
Despite the carnage around him, Australian skipper Mitch Marsh stood firm, compiling a gutsy 88. However, his solitary effort was not enough to prevent the inevitable. His dismissal signaled the end of any realistic hope for an Australian victory, as they were eventually bundled out for 198, well short of the target.
